Lil Peep Has Passed Away At 21

The Long Island native was considered a rising star in hip-hop.

Rapper Lil Peep (real name Gustav Åhr) has passed away at 21, multiple reports have confirmed. According to CNN, he was found unresponsive in his tour bus in Tuscon, Ariz. and first responders “rendered medical aid but they were unable to save him.” Pima County police told The Associated Press that autopsy results indicate his cause of death is likely a drug overdose, but final toxicology results won’t be available for several weeks.

Peep was known for his distinct style blending rock and hip-hop music, and he often rapped about drug use and depression. Many of his biggest songs include frank discussions of death, and he was frequently classified as “emo rap.” He gained popularity primarily through SoundCloud, where he amassed over 300,000 followers and tallied millions of streams on his biggest tracks.

Peep released four mixtapes in his career starting in 2015: Lil Peep Part One, Live Forever, Crybaby, and Hellboy. He dropped his debut album Come Over When You’re Sober, Part 1 back in August, featuring songs like “Benz Truck,” “Awful Things,” and “Better Off (Dying).” He’s also known for songs like “Star Shopping” and “White Wine.” He worked frequently with Lil Tracy and had been teasing a project in collaboration with Makonnen before his death.

“I am shocked and heartbroken,“ said First Access Entertainment CEO Sarah Stennett, whose company worked closely with Peep. "I do not believe Peep wanted to die, this is so tragic. He had big goals and dreams for the future which he had shared with me, his team, his family and his friends. He was highly intelligent, hugely creative, massively charismatic, gentle and charming. He had huge ambition and his career was flourishing. I have spoken to his mother and she asked me to convey that she is very, very proud of him and everything he was able to achieve in his short life. She is truly grateful to the fans and the people who have supported and loved him.”

A number of musicians memorialized Peep on social media:
