Lil Baby Talks ‘Street Gossip,’ Atlanta’s Rap Scene, & His Memorable Line from “Yes Indeed” On ‘For The Record’

Lil Baby closed out 2018 strong with Street Gossip. It comes on the heels of the Atlanta rapper’s debut album, Harder Than Ever, and Drip Harder, his collaborative project with Gunna. On the latest episode of For The Record, Baby sat down with Genius' Head of Artist Relations Rob Markman to discuss Street Gossip, his natural chemistry with Gunna, and collaborating with Drake on his breakthrough hit, “Yes Indeed.”

“Music always been my thing, but I always looked up to the hustlers in my neighborhood, not really like the rappers,” Lil Baby explains about his late start to rapping. “I grew a passion for it, like I’m into certain lil stuff now. I research certain stuff, I’m a whole rapper. They be like, ‘Oh yeah, you’re a rapper.’ But over the time, and just doing it, and getting the feedback, and… creating a family in it, I done started being really into it, giving it my all.”

Baby tells Genius that he sees Gunna as his brother. “We’ve been really had crazy feedback ever since we first started and we made a song together. The fans have always liked us together,” he says. “I’ve been on every one of his tapes, he’s been on every one of my tapes, so it’s kind of like we already had songs out on the low where people just didn’t pay attention.”

The Quality Control rapper touches on the origins of “Yes Indeed,” explaining that he was inspired by Drake’s yellow Ferrari to reference the Pokémon character Pikachu. Baby also admits that didn’t he didn’t expect his most popular line from the song to become a fan favorite. “I still don’t know what the catchy part about that is,” he says. “I mean I get it, ‘Wah wah wah, bitch I’m the baby.’ But the way people have caught it, I never would have thought… That shit lit though now, that’s the thing to say.”
